He doesnt want people to put through how naïve he is about the world, but he cant be his own surprise at other times. Hes caught in the parlous riptide between childhood and the adult world, youth. Hes not quite an an jaded enough to mask his sur prise, but not even so young enough to revel in it. I believe this throughout the course of this novel he comes to agnise his part in the adult world, more so than when he leaves Pencey.
Revelation #2: The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the deluxe ring you afford to let them do it, and not say anything. If they evanesce off, they fall off, but its bad if you say anything to them.(p.211) Now, this is all told opposite to what Holden says when hes lecture to Phoebe about the poem. Then he talks about how these little kids theyre running and they dont look where theyre departure and how he wants to be the one who has to come out from some! where...
